About the project

This project was part of the Product Design course at Projector Institute, where I worked
with AJAX Systems - largest security systems manufacturer in Europe. to design a beta
testing platform for their new devices.

As Product and UX/UI Designer, I led research through interviews with testers, the beta
testing team, and developers, designed end-to-end platform flows, and validated
solutions through usability testing. I collaborated with the design team to ensure our
designs aligned with product goals and technical constraints.

The Client The Problem

AJAX have an open beta program to test new devices with real users before launch. Unlike their closed
beta, where products are tested under strictly controlled conditions - open beta involves selected users
testing devices in real-world environments for several weeks. Testers complete specific test cases and
submit reports, allowing AJAX to polish devices, fix bugs, and refine the user experience based on
genuine user feedback.

The problem: AJAX had no unified platform for this process. Beta testing was scattered across different
messengers and third-party services, creating significant problems in team-tester communication,
feedback collection, and process automation. AJAX needed a dedicated platform to streamline the
entire beta testing experience.

In this project research stage was truly the most important and mandatory stage, as we needed to
understand all the complexities and intricacies of the testing process, as well as testers' experience in it.
We chose qualitative research through user interviews as our primary method, we defined it as most
suitable for our context and conditions.

But right from this moment we faces complications - we didn't have direct communication with AJAX, all
our requests and questions went through our course mentor, which slowed down wholle communication.
But thsi was only the begining, took significantly longer than expected to find testers, pushing us behind
schedule and delivering only half the participants we needed.

Reed more about AJAX

Problem wasn't only getting half of expected amount of participants, but also the testers we
got themselves. AJAX's main problematic audience are foreign testers, so that was our target
research audience, yet most of testers provided by AJAX were Ukrainians - the group, AJAX
had virtually no problems with.
This forced us to adapt: instead of focusing on users' pain points, we shifted toward deep
analysis of the entire testing flow to identify and predict root causes of problem areas

The most effective solution would be to move all communication and testing
processes one platform, eleminating other tools, like messengers. But this is
expensive in development, so we needed to find what can be moved to
platform, and what should be left on the side.

Dashboard also works on motivation problem, one of the key problems,
pointed out by AJAX memebers. the Dashboard includes Statistics cards and
an Achievements section, designed to increase participation and maintain
motivation throughout testing periods.

Current feedback submission and bug reporting are scattered across different
tools and flows, that are not intended for these purposes.

Unified interface for feedback submission and bug reports will simplify and
make the process convenient and clear for testers. while dividing submission
interface into steps with progress indication reduce testers' overwhelm,
increasing their tendency to complete the submission.

Research revealed that testers morivations stems from different factors and
sources, but all pain points converges on one gap: lack of clarity in rating
and motivation system.

Our solution centered around Tester Profile - a hub with measurable rating in
core and gamification elements for engagement and motivation. This gives
testers understing of their contribution, sustains engagement, and provides
managers with a tool to easily match testers to future testings.

Another key hypothesis that we considered as the most potentially impactful
was notifications. The idea is simple, notifications remind user about testings,
warn about deadlines, keeping testers informed and engaged.

Solution that balances usability simplisity
with efficiency at its core

Ajax Systems is a Ukrainian technology company that develops wirelessand wired security systems
and is the largest manufacturer of securitysystems in Europe, with over 4 million users in 187 countries.

AJAX have an open beta program for testing their devices close torelease. This is specifically open
beta, which goes after their closed betawhere they test products for every cases and scenarios in
strictlycontrolled conditions. Open beta on the other hand is different, this betagoes among regular,
chosen by team users. They gather a number oftesters and give them devices for testing. The testing
lasts for a fewweeks, usually up to a month, during which time the testers shouldcomplete several test
cases specified by the AJAX developers andsubmit reports for the testing period. This final testing
allows the team topolish the device, find and fix bugs, as well as refine the user experienceafter
receiving real-world feedback and seeing real user interaction with the device.
